Produce box news page
July 2009
Sorry were not been keeping you up to date with a regular news feature but we have been so busy, it all keeps growing and growing. The weather has been much more favorable for us this season, in fact too dry at time which means we have to get up even earlier to water before the heat of the day, but were not moaning, its great to see the sun. Pete and Kat have joined our team working at Keveral and have been growing some great produce for the box. Skye Grove because of its exposed location has later crops, Bill & Ben the horses who work the land have been busy breaking in a new plot which will start to deliver vegetable for the box in late July. Some interesting new varieties of tomatoes are being grown this year, Robert who's daughter lives in Australia brought back some new heirloom seed from his visit earlier this year and today we tasted the first, Tommy Toe a tiny sweet cherry tomato, delicious.

Spring is a coming and the land is warming ready for the new seasons plantings. The "hungry gap" is with us when produce is in very short supply and fruit prices are rocketing due to the weak pound but you can be assured we are still able to grow and source the best produce available for the boxes. Its still a very rewarding time for us the growers as the little seedlings are now popping up and we can feel the energy in the soil rising, soon some of the best new season produce will be with us.

We are now into our fourth week of deliveries having taken the scheme over in November . We have had an exciting and challenging transition period gathering your details, meeting you on our rounds and delivering lovely fruit and vegetables. Our personal information sheets have been a great success and thank you to all those who completed them. If you still have one to do pop it in your empty box anytime. We have had a few teething problems but overall everything has run quite smoothly. We are happy to have been able to offer seasonal extras both this week and next. The delicious jams and chutneys are made from fresh organic produce grown at Keveral. We would like to thank Lambrini at Keveral Farm for her work in making them. We are also delighted to be able to supply coffee from Origin coffees based in Falmouth. We are keen to source produce grown or supplied in Cornwall.

Last Saturday we promoted the box scheme at the regular Fifteen Cornwall farmers market that was held in the car park above the restaurant at Watergate bay on the North Cornish coast. Neil Haydock the executive chef sang our praises and during his demonstration mentioned that we were going to be offering some of the produce they import and produce to our box customers. Tasty treats like homemade focaccia bread, big jucy olives from Puglia and olive oil that they direct import. More soon!.
Its getting to that muddy time of year on the farms, its these times that you can really appreciate the light touch on the ground that is achieved using horses rather than tractors. The frosts always improve the taste of the winter vegetables but make for chilly hands when cropping. The promotional flyer that we have been handing out has produced several new customers and this week we start our regular deliveries into Plymouth. If you know of anyone who may like a box please pass on our contact information, more customers mean that we will be able to offer a wider range of produce and extras. Soon you will receive a list of the first of the extras - including homemade jams and conserves from the Keveral kitchen and organic coffee from Origin based in Falmouth, it really is good, rich 100% arabica with a great depth of flavour, the best is that we will be offering it below its suggested retail price..

Welcome to customers both old and new. It was with great excitement that last week the new 'Keveral Community of Growers' team embarked on the refreshing of the vegetable packing barn. Sean and his partner Kate adorned their decorating gear and got working. Pete from Keveral Farm had already stripped the barn so the walls were ready and waiting to be whitewashed. Little did we know what slow work it was going to be to cover every nook and cranny with a cold north wind whistling through the windows. However the transformation is dazzling!
We are now looking forward to gathering our first beautiful fruit and vegetables for the boxes this week. We hope to meet some of you on our rounds and please do not hesitate to contact us if you have any queries.
